DR MARTENS LEAGUE - EASTERN DIVISION The top four in the Eastern Division remained unchanged after the midweek and Saturday programme of fixtures. Folkestone Invicta held onto top place with a 5 - 0 success over Spalding United. Ashford Town climbed level on points with their Kent colleagues thanks to a fine midweek win over Chelmsford City (1 - 0) and a 2 - 0 win at Corby Town on Saturday. Lee McRobert scored both Ashford goals against Corby to take his league tally, so far, to 13. Newport IOW hang onto Ashford's coat tail, two points behind but with two games in hand. After a fantastic match at Burnham on Tuesday, when Newport won 4 - 3, Stephen Riley scored the goal on Saturday to secure the Islanders latest victory, a 1 - 0 win over V.S. Rugby. Fisher Athletic closed in the leading pack in emphatic style, a 5 - 2 win at Witney Town. Although the division's joint leading scorer, Carl Henry, struck twice for Witney, Fisher answered back with goals from Steve Portway (2), Mark Newson, Sean McEntegart and Tony Dolby. Hastings lurk just off the leader board. The men from the Pilot Field are ten points behind Folkestone but have three games in hand of the leaders. With only one defeat in ten outings, their challenge is real. But they had to come from two goals behind at Fleet on Saturday to win 3 - 2. The Jones' boys, Paul and Duncan, along with Terry White earned the Sussex club it's sixth win of the season. |

Folkestone Invicta The Vics are flushed with the current success of the club's Youth Team. Young Invicts have reached the Second Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup. Victories over Basingstoke Town, Didcot Town, Greenwich Borough and Lordswood have earned the team a trip to Millwall. The last time Folkestone reached this stage of the Competition was during the 1982/83 season. Folkestone Town, as they were then known, eventually reached the Third Round where they lost 6 - 1 at home to West Ham United. Alan Dickens and Tony Cottee each scored a hat-trick. Hastings Town Hastings' midweek draw with Sittingbourne was the club's twelfth game against the Brickies, without a win. Since joining the Southern League in 1985, Hastings Town have managed six draws but suffered six defeats. |

Spalding United Spalding United begin their defence of the Lincolnshire 'A' Cup on Wednesday 3 November with a trip to Brigg Town. The Tulips were omitted from the County's top knock-out competition, in which Lincolnshire's three Football League clubs play alongside the senior non-Football League clubs, because the draw was carried out before Spalding's promotion to the Dr Martens League was known. Spalding United were promoted following the club's Championship season in the United Counties League, in May! |

FA Challenge Cup Ilkeston Town reached the Second Round of the FA Cup with a 2 - 1 win over Carlisle United, despite falling behind in the 18th minute. Ilkeston's Christian Moore equalised Harries 18th minute opener, before half-time and Paul Raynor struck the Robins' winner in the 62nd minute to make it an unhappy return to Ilkeston for Carlisle Chairman Michael Knighton (Mr Knighton reportedly played for the Robins many years ago). Ilkeston Town now entertain former Dr Martens League colleagues Rushden & Diamonds in Round Two. Tamworth fell behind in the first minute of their game against Bury. Former Dr Martens League player Darren Bullock (ex-Nuneaton) struck Bury's opener but Warren Haughton levelled matters seven minutes later. Mark Hallam then missed a penalty for the Lambs, but made amends by striking Tamworth's second equaliser in the 75th minute after Bury had gone ahead through Adrian Littlejohn. A victory in the replay at Gigg Lane will give Tamworth another tie, this time against Leyton Orient or Cardiff City. And Burton Albion became the third Dr Martens League club to feature in the FA Cup Second Round draw after their goalless draw with Rochdale. A trip to Wrexham or Kettering Town awaits the winner of the replay at Spotland. Disaster struck at Bath, where the Romans conceded two goals in the final three minutes of the game to lose to Hendon. Cambridge City gave a very good account of themselves against Wigan Athletic after conceding home advantage and two first half goals by Stuart Barlow, the former Everton striker. Chelmsford City's fine Cup run, which began in the Preliminary Round, ended at Boundary Park, Oldham. Former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, John Sheridan, was amongst Oldham's very experienced four goal scorers. Merthyr Tydfil meet Stalybridge Celtic in their First Round tie on Tuesday, after Stalybridge beat Altrincham for the second time in eleven days. The Football Association ordered the Fourth Qualifying Round Tie to be played again after Stalybridge were found to have played an ineligible player in the previous Tuesday's replayed game. |

Kings Lynn The Linnets have signed Christopher Cleaver, a 20 year old striker form Peterborough United, on temporary transfer. Cleaver has so far made 29 appearances for Posh and has scored three goals. Cleaver spent a while on loan in the Dr Martens League last season with Grantham. Two players, though, are expected to leave the Walks Stadium. Indeed the registration of Jeremy Goss, the former Norwich City, Hearts and Welsh International midfielder player, has already been cancelled. Goalkeeper Chonkri 'Chuck' Monsaddik Martini is also available to move on. the Moroccan International, who began his career with Wimbeldon Juniors before moving on to Wycombe Wanderers where he made one appearance in the Football League, joined the Linnets from Leicester City. After leading a consortium in 1994 that effectively 'turned the scales' for Kings Lynn Football Club, Chairman John Scales has decided it's time to step down. After scaling the heights in his commercial career, John recently retired from his business. The time is right, says John, to take a lower profile, make space for his other interest and, most importantly, spend more time with his wife Jenny. John's position has been taken by Mike Brannor. Mike has also been involved since the change of administration five years ago. He is well known in the local community for his role as Chairman of Foster Refridgeration and Premark UK. Mike is also a prominent figure with the local Chamber of Commerce, 'Festival Too' and several local charities. |

TO ALL SUPPORTERS OF THE FENMEN Dear Supporter I am writing this further to my comments in the programme to put you in the picture regarding the present situation. Disappointing results have seen the first team languishing in the lower reaches of the League. Consequently attendances have diminished by 25% to 300, below the 400 mark upon which our season budgets were set. The only high gates have been for cup-ties but once match expenses and visitors' expenses have been met, any remaining gate receipts are shared between the two clubs. In reality, gate receipts for a home cup-tie of £1600 can leave us with a share of about £500. In the league I would suggest that many of the clubs we entertain have a higher potential of income from outside the club through higher population, larger industrial concerns etc. which enables them to exist on much lower attendances. Because of our geographical position and rural surroundings, our potential financial support form outside the club is less. All credit must be given to our Commercial Manager for the sponsorship deals that he is able to generate and we are extremely grateful to all the sponsors and advertisers for the support they give. To try to compensate for the loss of income from gates action had to be taken. While the normal running costs of rates, electricity etc. remain fairly constant, remedial measures are being taken to reduce other expenditure off the field. Various fund raising options are also being considered. You are already aware of the decisions regarding the Reserves and it is to the credit of all concerned that we are now able to continue. In spite of this the Board reluctantly have been forced to make cuts to the playing budget to compensate for the loss of income so far season. All is not doom and gloom however. The cloud has a silver lining in that this now gives an excellent opportunity to the promising youngsters who have been nurtured over the past 12 months and who are, with the Academy, part of the Youth Development programme. They, like all at the club, need your support. We are all working for the benefit of the club. If you feel you can help the club in any way please let any of the Directors know. Your continued attendance and support are crucial.

Chat Room Open As promised, the Wisbech Town chat room opened today, (23/07/99), all be it ten minutes late thanks to a server crashing. Don't you just love technology. Within a few minutes the first conversation was in full swing. Thanks everyone who was involved in that first chat, I hope you will visit again, and remember to tell your friends. Having used the room myself, there are a few observations I would like to share in order to make your life easier when using the room. Firstly, it is far better to use an unusual handle than your actual name. The main reason for this is that most common names, such as Andrew, Sue, David etc are already taken by Xoom members and as such cannot be allocated. If you do enter a name that is taken just try another. The more unusual the name, the less chance there is of having a problem. You need only enter details into all the user info boxes if you wish to join Xoom, otherwise, simply enter your chosen handle in the name box and click on connect. Obviously you need a minimum of two people to be present in the room in order to chat. while the facility is in it's infancy, this will not always be the case. One possible answer is to try and arrange a date and time to meet friends on-line. Meanwhile, we are looking into providing a notice board where users are able to publish what time they will be entering the chat room. This should help when deciding when to go on-line to talk 'footy'. If you encounter any problems, please mail me and we will put it right, otherwise, please enjoy your new chat facility. |

Everybody has an opinion in Football, so lets hear yours! Remember, this site is here for you, so if you have a view, be it about this site, the teams performances or simply a quick hello, why not email it to us, and we will include it in a new letters page, and remember all email is forwarded to the club the same day, so this is your chance to tell the manager he should be playing Willy, playing with more width, or anything else you would like to suggest. If this feature proves popular, I will arrange a prize for the best email every month, so get typing. We are also interested in seeing where people are connecting from. For example, are any of you out there connecting from another country, are you old Wisbechians, perhaps now living else where in the country? Why not spare a moment to fill in the visitors book, we really would love to hear from you. |
