Subject: Married Status

Date: 11th June 1999

Why do you give the married status of Wisbech Ladies but not of the male players. I assume this Web site is maintained by a man!

(ED...You are correct in your assumption that the site is maintained by a man, although there are also two ladies on the development team, who with time will become more involved in the day to day running of this site. The reason for the difference in information provided for the ladies and the first team is simply that we tend to use the information provided and as the ladies pen pics provide married status we were able to include the information on the site. Although the first team pen pics do not provide this information, I shall endeavor to gain this knowledge before publishing next seasons player information. I would add that several of the ladies attached to Barnwood Web Solutions have for some time campaigned for a first team calender in keeping with the one produced by the ladies but so far no luck. SORRY!)

Subject: Under 18's

Date: 26 Feb 1999

When are we going to see some of the under 18's play in the first team. I think that David Cobb and Mathew Warfield should definitely be in the first team next year. I believe that we have up and coming talent in Daniel Russcilo, Damien Nelson and Mathew Jones.

Mathew Hanson, (Yorkshire)

(ED...I agree, Wisbech Town are rich with up and coming talent, many of whom have played very well both at reserve and youth level. The Wisbech Town Youths won three trophies in the 98/99 season and the event of the new Soccer academy can only help still further. I am sure you will see some youth in the first team this coming season but remember, you still need a balance of experience. 9/6/99)

Subject: Ladies Calender

Date: 6th May 1999

How do you obtain the Wisbech Town Ladies Football Team Calender?

(ED...Simple, send a large SAE to Wisbech Town Web Site, Fenland Park, Lerowe Road, Wisbech, Cambs, PE13 3QL and I will send you one by return, courtesy of the Editor. I still have a few more to give away, any witty letters out there?)

(ED...Yep)

Subject: Peter Munns

Date: 20 November 1998

I think setting up a fan club for Peter Munns, (or Munns 50 as he is affectionately known), would be a great idea. I always look up to him as my mentor. I only hope that one day I can score as well as him, both on and off the field.

Subject: Mungo

Date: 18 November 1998

You're right that Mungo has quite a following although it would appear that one particular fan is embarrassed about publicly declaring his affection for the boy wonder! Jamie - spell my name right next time you use it!

Subject: New Rooms

Date: 16 November 1998

Dear Wisbech Town Football Club,
As a follower of your football club I have come up with an idea that could be used to link supporters of the Fenmen from far away with us local fans. I am talking about a chat room in which Wisbech fans get to put their views across with other fans. You could have a special hour where a player from the team is in the chat room, live, so that fans can talk to him.

Yours
Chris Hawkins

PS, Hope this idea is taken seriously. Hope to hear from you in the near future.

(ED...Thanks for your comments Chris, I have mailed you personally, but felt that your idea deserved a place on this letters page as well. Does anyone else think the idea is worth pursuing?)

Subject: Peter Munns

Nice to see the Fenmen doing well especially local striker Peter Munns.

(ED...Chatteris for promotion?)

Subject: Gumms

Date: 9 November 1998

Town: Chatteris

Comments: I am a good friend of Peter Munns and I can honestly say his football has improved due to his "off-field" activities. I know he has worked very hard to try and get some stamina into his game. Shady Munns or " Gumms" as he is known to his mates is the MAN.

Jonathon Parfrey

(ED...It would seem that Peter Munns is developing a fan club)

Subject: Spelling

Date: 2 November 1998

Oh come on - please check your spelling! I might forgive "Chuck" in Martini and even "Linnets" but who on earth are Wickham Wanderers?

The Stationery Office Ltd

(ED...Sorry Wycombe, it was a slip up on my part. However from the point of view of Chuck and Linnets, Chuck was copied directly from a DR. Martens Bulletin and you would surely either need to be Moroccan or a Kings Lynn supporter to know any different, while I thought that this was how you spelt Linnets. Anyway, good to see you were paying attention).

Subject: Lee Bray

Date: 2 November 1998

I have known Lee Bray since he was one inch tall and I know a lot of funny secrets.

Do you want to know any of them?

I was just standing there enjoying a pre match tea flavoured drink, when this unsavoury character sidles up to me..."ere...no pressure..and no frets or nuffink...but if somebody was to send an email saying wot nice people programme editors are...they might get to keep their teef a bit longer...no what I mean?"

Well, feeling completely un "frettened"...I rushed home afterwards and immediately formed a society to protect victims of electronic abuse...so, may I invite like minded people to subscribe to Stop Offending and Upsetting Regular Programme Updaters and Sorters...or SOURPUS for short.

Send £10, a used program and three coupons from the Sunday Sport financial supplement to NODROG SMOOTH at the Reggie and Ronnie memorial hut, Fenland Park, Wisbech.

Subject: Australia

Is this site new? I have been looking for a Wisbech site for ages. I used to exchange programmes with a Wisbech lad in the 60s when I lived in Gravesend and we played in the same division when Pye was there. I have since met an Australian who played there too.

Subject: Australia, Continued

Date: 2 November 1998

There wasn't enough room to finish what I was writing so this is the rest of it. I still follow Gravesend, from here in Sydney and in recent weeks have struck up some good email friendships with their people. I used to write regularly to a Wisbech supporter as a child and we exchanged programmes. I was sorry to see the club leave the SL a few years ago and pleased that they are back. I had a feeling you might have a website but have only just found it through Paul Crankshaw's easynet pyramid site.

In Sydney I met a chap called Alex Vesic who played here for years and also was a soccer writer and who also told me he played for Wisbech while studying in England after the war. Wonder if anyone has heard of him.

Good luck for the future. If the non league divisions are reorganised again for next year you may play Gravesend again.

Wonder what happened to my old Wisbech pen friend. Can't remember his name unfortunately as I had lots of pen friends at various SL clubs. Perhaps you can make room for visitors comments to be shown on the site as letters do not appear to be submittable from the site itself.

Paul Goodwin, (Mount Kuring-gai, NSW Austrailia)

(ED...I have Emailed Paul to tell him that we do have a letters page. Great to get a mail from the other side of the world, hope to hear from you again)

Subject: Peter Munns

Date: 23 October 1998

A quick note to give praise to my hero Peter Munns whose skills astound me and is perhaps not given enough credit where Wisbech is concerned. I also feel that his Friday nights are very beneficial to his skills as a footballer!

Name and Address Withheld.

(ED...I agree that Peter is having a superb season and has become a much more rounded player who obviously learned much from Jackie Gallagher. As for his Friday nights, I can only say that you obviously know more than we do?)

Subject: Free Tickets

Hello! I was delighted to learn that you have awarded me letter of the month!! Thanks. However....I'm afraid I don't know who to approach for my free tickets..!! Stop hiding behind your excellent website and make yourself known!! Those of a certain generation would remember a competition run by a Sunday newspaper...where a mystery person would roam popular holiday resorts..one had to approach him ..clutching a copy of the Sunday Mirror.. and boldly state ..."You are Chalky White ..and I claim my five pounds..." These same people would also remember Bobby Langton and Jesse Pye!!

Richard Meek.

(ED...If you let me know which match you would like to attend Richard, I will arrange for your tickets to be held for you at the gate).

Subject: Ian Williams POLL

Date: 11 October 1998

As a Grantham supporter I would like to see Ian Williams given a regular place up front for Wisbech. In recent encounters with yourselves, he seemed to be in midfield, while at Grantham he was a prolific goal scorer and I am sure that he could still do the same.

Good Luck for the season and please give Stamford a kicking as there are two ex-Grantham players playing for them.

Andrew Sutton,

Subject: Ian Williams POLL

Date: 8 October 1998

I do not believe that Ian Williams should get a place in the first team squad. With Lee Stephenson, Shaun Keeble and Peter Munns, who are starting to look sharp up front together. I do not believe that Williams deserves his place. Mark Garwood is also pushing for a place but nobody considers him.

Regards,

Terry Hawkins.

(ED...Lee Stephenson is now playing in the reserve team and Mark has made it to the subs bench in the first team. Ian of course, Willy has gone)

Subject: The Pyramid System

Date: 7 October 1998

It's been a hobby horse of mine for a long while now, but I really do think that a review of the geographical make-up of the non-league is overdue. As I live in Bury St. Edmunds I have been spoiled by being able to get to all the Eastern County league matches very easily. Very different now where in the (west) Midland League! I don't really know what impact the change has had for people who actually live in the Wisbech area, but some of the distances seem horrendous. Living where I do, I have watched Sudbury, Braintree and Bury surge up the pyramid only to drop ingloriously back, mainly due to travel and associated costs. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure we were right, and still are to seek promotion, but when I see teams like Wroxham and Diss unable to progress, when they could more than hold their own in the Dr. Martens league, I feel sure that an Eastern "Super League" would be possible. What do others think?

Regards

Richard Meek.

(ED...This is a subject that has had a great deal of media attention recently, fueled by talk of a Conference second division, and the reorganisation of the Dr. Martens league to incorporate Corby, Brackly and Raunds in the Southern division while placing Newport AFC, Clevedon and Weston Super Mare in the Midland Division. Another problem is that the boundaries of the Dr. Martens league and the Ryman league overlap, and as both authorities are keen to protect their membership, it is difficult to see a time when they might sit round a table and reorganise the pyramid. I am not sure that an Eastern "Super League" is the answer, as it is likely that it would have to come into the pyramid as a feeder to either the Rymans or Dr. Martens, thus further complicating matters. The answer, I believe, lies in applying sensible boundaries to the various leagues, perhaps reorganising the Rymans League to incorporate all of the south, with the Ryman Premier fed by two south western and two south eastern divisions. The Dr. Martens League could then be dedicated to the Midlands, changing the current Southern and Midland divisions that feed the Premier, to Eastern and Western divisions. The Unibond could again be divided, with Eastern and Western divisions feeding the Unibond Premier. The Premier divisions are then free to feed the Conference or Conference Two. This could help ease the financial burden, which was the downfall of all of the clubs you have mentioned, although I am sure that Braintree would argue that being top of the Ryman first division is anything but 'inglorious'. It is also worth pointing out that had we been playing in the Dr. Martens Premier division this season, the average distance travelled would have been less than it is in our current division. With that having been said, it is worth noting that any club seriously attempting promotion to the Conference must be willing to travel, as it is a national division. This is a subject I feel certain will continue to stir emotions for much time to come and I would welcome mail from any other supporters with something to say on this subject. Thanks for the mail Richard, you have won our first mail of the month award, drop me a line when you want your two free tickets)

Subject: Match change

Date: 6 October 1998

Why was the away fixture a VS Rugby brought forward without notification?

Living away from Wisbech we rely on different sources of information, primarily this Web page (which still shows the date as 4th November) and local newspapers (Leicester Mercury) which detailed Wisbech v Stafford Rangers as the fixture for 3rd October.

Are there any alterations we should know about?

Regards

David and Sarah Shales

(ED....Thanks for your comments, and yes, due to an oversight on our part, the fixtures list was not altered to reflect the change in fixture and for this reason we would like to offer you two free tickets to any Wisbech match, home or away. In our defence, the fixture change was announced on our news page, and the story was carried for about two weeks. We try very hard to supply all supporters with a quality fanzine, but I am afraid this time we just simply slipped up. Sorry!)

Subject: Joe Green

Date: 22 September 1998

Dear Sir/Madam,
With just seconds remaining of a difficult looking game on New Year's Day of this year (1998) away to Ilkeston, the Fenmen trail 3-2. All of a sudden the ball is pumped down the line and Nicky Law needlessly concedes a last minute corner.....The out swinging corner forces panic in the Ilkeston penalty area, the ball bobbles around and then debutante Joe Green drives a low shot forcing a deflection to carry the ball high into the stanchion area!! (3-3). In the bar after the game, a certain Wisbech supporter (Alan Jones, 67 Walton Road, Wisbech, if you're interested!), claimed that the ball went into the bottom corner of the net. Frankly we were mystified. For those of you who remember was it top corner or bottom corner, because it's creating tension amongst friends. Keep up the good work on the page, and I look forward to sending a slightly more serious mail soon.
Best wishes,

Luke Mawbey
Colin Farr

(ED....Ok Lads, I am glad to say I can bring an end to the tension. I have consulted the one man you can guarantee remembers the goal, Joe Green himself, and can confirm it was the top corner. Sorry Alan Thanks for your comments and your support, we look forward to receiving your next mail soon)

Subject: letters

Date: 16 September 1998

In response to the web site appeal for readers' letters...I think that Wisbech Town play better with their Willy....than without.! There were chants at a recent home game of "free willy"...but sadly for the ladies in the tea hut...there wasn't any. I would suggest that RAB gets out the cheque-book and instructs the manager to sign well proven players such as Clive Death,Jerry Lowery and Gary Rider to bolster the team,if the latter brought his brother with him...we would be as happy as a team with two willies.

I would also like to suggest a competition for "supporter-of the-month" My candidates would be Sam and Dennis....points to be given for humour/originality and venom...as well as persistence. Marks would be deducted for repetition and deviation.........

My personal all-time favorite would be during the time when Phil Ward was in charge...and during a dreadfully turgid game against someone like Brantham. Phil came slithering into a defensive tackle in the region of the dressing room corner....as he slid haplessly past...Sam hollered "keep going Wardy...the gate's open!!"

Love the web site...keep it up...and don't forget..we need more Willy!!

Richard Meek

(ED....Thanks for the mail Richard, I think the supporter of the month award is a great idea, so if anyone else would like to nominate a supporter for September, I will put together a prize, and I will pass your comments on to RAB)

Subject: Appalled,Embarrassed and Disappointed

Date: 07 September 1998

I am a Wisbech ex pat having left to set up home in Nottingham in 1969. I used to watch Town in the days of Sam Malpass and have followed their fortunes ever since. I came to the FA Cup at Lerowe Road last year against Bristol and was embarrassed at the vile racist taunts which went unnoticed by the stewards and was there on Saturday against Bedford. The first half was most enjoyable listening to the witty and admittedly sometimes crude humour of the Bedford fans at the Lerowe Road end and stayed there for the second half. The Neanderthal behaviour and language of the home fans, both adults and children, was sickening and appalling. There was no wit or humour, just aggression, foul language and abuse. The highlight of the fans' afternoon seemed to be spitting on the Bedford goalkeeper and taunting him. I was ashamed of my Wisbech town scarf which I shall be returning to thechairman since I no longer wish to be associated with the football club of my home town. I hope this letter can be published in the programme because I am sure there are other fans who must agree with my point of view.

I also hope the club will be able to do something to change the behaviour of the fans, but until it does the Fenmen and their so called fans will continue to deserve their unflattering reputation as an inward looking, inbred and ignorant collection of yokels and village idiots.

Name and address supplied.
