Last Season, 1997/98, after twenty seven years in the Eastern Counties League, Wisbech finished in a creditable fifth position in its first season back in the Southern League; the Second Round Proper of the F.A. Challenge Cup was reached, losing to Bristol Rovers. Wisbech Town's highest-ever goalscorer - Jim Youles, who scored 73 goals in season 1931/32; his total was 246 goals in 173 appearances with 30 hat-tricks. Most appearances - Jamie Brighty with 731, Bill Feary 616, B.Clarkson 612. Last season's Average Southern League Attendance - 500. Including Cup-ties, the Average Attendance was 646. Players progressing to Football League include Peter Dobson (Ipswich); Paul Scott (Blackpool), Bryan Harvey and Terry Marshall (Newcastle), Colin Flatt (Leyton Orient), and Jackie Gallagher (Lincoln). Last season the Club celebrated fifty years at Fenland Park. The highest gate was 8,044 v Peterborough United, 25th August 1957. The Ground has cover on all four sides and the floodlights have a lux value of 236. Extra terracing has been installed and future plans include the installation of extra seating. A Hospitality Suite and Office Complex has been built. The total attendance authorised is 3,804 The Club played in the Peterborough League until 1935 when the decision was taken to turn semi-professional. Entry was gained to the United Counties League in 1950 1950 - 1952 Eastern Counties League 1952 - 1958 Midland League 1958 - 1970 Southern League 1970 - 1997 Eastern Counties League 1997 - 1998 Dr Martens League - Midland Division The Reserve side starts this season in the Endsleigh Midland Combination, Reserve Division; they have been playing in the Peterborough Premier League, in the last two seasons they have finished runners-up and third. The Club also runs a Youth Team in the Fenland Floodlit League. The Fenmen's colours are red shirts, red shorts. Change strip is yellow shirts, green shorts. Highest Score 18 - 1 v Rushden (U.C.L.) 1945/46. Highest Defeat 1 - 10 v Brighton (F.A. Cup) 1965/66. Clubs played in the Competition Proper of the F.A.Cup are Ipswich Town (2), Colchester United, Reading, Newport County, Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Kingstonian, St.Albans City, Billericay and Bristol Rovers. |

SOUTHERN LEAGUE FACTS - WISBECH TOWN 1958 TO 1970 Several Clubs have asked for information on our previous membership of the Southern League which is as follows :
Wisbech had four paid Managers in the Southern League - Oscar Hold, Jesse Pye, Colin Flatt (for a month), and Bryan Boggis. £157,100 was spent on wages, travelling and refreshments. Costliest season was 1961/62 when the Board splashed out £18,588. Wisbech received over £15,725 in transfer fees during those 12 years. Biggest Home win 8-0 v Burton Albion in 1958/59 Biggest Away win 6-0 v Deal Town in 1965/66
During the 12 seasons Wisbech Town was in the Southern League from 1958 to 1970 the average gate dropped from 2,789 to 409. Average Gates per season:
The highest Gate was on 30th Aug. 1958 v Burton Albion when 3,839 passed through the turnstiles. The lowest Gate was 221 v Cheltenham on 14th March 1970. Wisbech Town v Dunstable 19th March 1967 was the first semi-professional match to be played on a Sunday. Admission was by programme which cost 3/- (15p); the attendance was 1,372.
